The Art of AI Agent Task Descriptions

Agent output quality is directly proportional to task description quality. Vague tasks produce vague results. Specific tasks produce specific results. This is not a nice theory — it is the single most controllable factor in whether your AI agent team delivers usable work or generates rework.

Most teams that struggle with agent output blame the model, the configuration, or the agent itself. In reality, the problem is almost always upstream: the task description did not give the agent enough to work with. Or it gave too much of the wrong thing.

Here is how to write task descriptions that consistently produce the work you actually want.

The Four Elements of a Good Task Description

Every effective task description includes four things. Miss any one of them and the output quality drops.

1. The Objective

What needs to be done — stated as an outcome, not a process. "Write a blog post about AI agent memory" tells the agent what topic to cover but says nothing about the purpose. "Write a blog post that helps developers understand how to implement persistent memory for AI agents" gives the agent a clear target to aim at.

The difference matters. The first version might produce a surface-level overview. The second produces something useful because the agent understands who it is writing for and what the reader should walk away with.

2. The Deliverable Format

What the output should look like. An agent producing a blog post needs to know: how long, what structure, what format. An agent producing a competitive analysis needs to know: comparison table or narrative, how many competitors, what dimensions to compare on.

Be explicit. "Write about 800 words in markdown with H2 headers for each main section, a one-paragraph introduction, and a clear CTA at the end" eliminates guesswork. The agent spends its effort on content quality instead of wondering whether you wanted bullet points or paragraphs.

3. Constraints

What to include, what to avoid, and what guardrails apply. Constraints are not limitations — they are focus tools. Without them, agents optimize for completeness and produce bloated, unfocused output.

Good constraints include:

  • Tone and voice. "Direct, conversational, no jargon" or "Technical, assume the reader knows Python."
  • Things to avoid. "Do not mention competitors by name" or "Skip pricing — that is handled on a separate page."
  • Structural requirements. "Each section should have a concrete example" or "Include at least one code snippet."
  • Length bounds. Not just word count — also "keep the introduction under 3 sentences" or "no more than 5 main sections."

Constraints let the agent make better judgment calls within a defined space. A task with no constraints forces the agent to guess your preferences on every dimension.

4. Context

Reference materials, background information, and examples. This is where most task descriptions fall short. People assume the agent knows what they know, and it does not.

Useful context includes:

  • Links to related content. "Follow the same format as [this existing post]" is more effective than describing the format from scratch.
  • Audience description. "Written for marketing managers who are evaluating AI tools for the first time" changes every sentence the agent writes.
  • Project background. "This is part of a 365-tool-challenge series where we publish one tool landing page per day" gives the agent a clear frame.
  • Previous feedback. "The last blog post was rejected because it was too generic — include specific, practical examples this time" prevents the same mistake.

If you would brief a human freelancer on these things, brief the agent too. Context is not optional. It is the difference between generic output and output that fits your specific situation.

Be Specific, Not Prescriptive

There is a common overcorrection when teams realize specificity matters. They go from "write about memory" to micromanaging every sentence: "Write exactly 600 words starting with 'Memory is...' using these exact headers in this exact order with this exact tone."

This kills the agent's ability to exercise judgment — which is exactly what you hired it for. Prescriptive descriptions produce robotic, formulaic output because the agent is following instructions instead of thinking about what makes the content good.

The sweet spot is clear boundaries with room to maneuver:

  • ❌ Too vague: "Write about AI agent task descriptions."
  • ❌ Too prescriptive: "Write exactly 750 words. Use the headers: Why Task Descriptions Matter, How to Write Them, Common Mistakes. Start each section with a question. End with a numbered list."
  • ✅ Just right: "Write an 800-word blog post about writing effective task descriptions for AI agents. Target audience: technical team leads running agent teams for the first time. Conversational tone, practical examples, clear takeaways. Follow the structure of our existing published posts."

The right level of specificity guides the direction without dictating every step. The agent fills in the details using its judgment and the context you provided.

Include Acceptance Criteria

Acceptance criteria define what "done" looks like. Without them, the agent decides on its own what constitutes a complete deliverable — and its definition will not always match yours.

Write acceptance criteria as a checklist the agent (and later, the reviewer) can verify against:

  • Blog post covers daily memory, long-term memory, and memory file structure
  • Includes at least one practical example showing how memory is used across sessions
  • SEO meta description is under 160 characters and includes the primary keyword
  • Word count is between 700 and 900 words
  • Ends with a CTA linking to agentcenter.cloud

Agents use acceptance criteria to self-evaluate before submitting. A well-defined checklist catches issues at the source instead of during review. It also makes reviews faster — you are checking against criteria instead of trying to articulate what feels off about the output.

Reference Existing Work

"Follow the same format as the PureDiff blog post" is more effective than describing the format from scratch. Reference examples give the agent a concrete target that no amount of description can fully replicate.

When referencing existing work:

  • Point to specific files. "See content/blogs/border-radius-generator-visual-css-editor.mdx for the structure" beats "look at our blog for examples."
  • Call out what to copy. "Match the tone and section structure, but this post should be shorter — around 800 words instead of 1200."
  • Include negative references too. "The email marketing post was too high-level. This one needs more practical detail."

Reference examples are especially powerful when onboarding new agents. Instead of spending paragraphs describing your formatting conventions, writing style, and content structure, point to two or three approved posts and say "like these."

Common Mistakes That Kill Output Quality

Overloading a Single Task

A task that says "write a landing page, a blog post, social media captions, and an email sequence for the new tool" is four tasks pretending to be one. The agent either produces shallow work on all four or goes deep on one and rushes the rest.

Split compound tasks. Each deliverable deserves its own task with its own description and acceptance criteria. This also makes review easier — you can approve the landing page while sending the blog post back for revision.

Assuming Context That Is Not There

"Write the next blog post" assumes the agent knows what the previous posts were, what topic is next, and what format to follow. Some of this may be in its memory — but memory is not guaranteed to have everything.

State context explicitly, even if it feels redundant. An agent with redundant context produces the same quality as one with the minimum. An agent missing context produces noticeably worse output.

Describing the Process Instead of the Outcome

"Research three competitors, then write a comparison table, then summarize the findings in a paragraph" describes how to do the work. "Produce a competitor comparison covering Competitor A, B, and C across pricing, features, and target audience. Format as a comparison table with a summary paragraph" describes what you want.

Process-oriented descriptions constrain the agent's problem-solving. Outcome-oriented descriptions let it find the best path to the result you care about. The agent may discover that four competitors are more relevant, or that a different comparison dimension matters more. Outcome focus lets it make those calls.

Skipping the Feedback Loop

When output misses the mark, the instinct is to reject the task and hope the agent does better next time. This rarely works. If the task description caused the problem, the same description will cause the same problem again.

Instead: reject with specific feedback, then update the task description template for future tasks. "This was too generic — I need concrete examples with actual tool names and use cases, not hypothetical scenarios" teaches the agent what went wrong and how to fix it.

Build a Task Description Template Library

As you write more tasks, patterns emerge. Blog posts have a consistent set of requirements. Landing pages follow a specific format. Competitive analyses need the same dimensions every time.

Capture these patterns as templates in your project docs. A template for a blog post might look like:

Title: [Topic] — [Angle] Objective: Write a blog post about [topic] targeting [audience] with [goal]. Format: [word count] words, markdown, H2 sections, intro + CTA. Constraints: [tone], [things to avoid], [things to include]. Context: [reference posts], [background], [audience details]. Acceptance Criteria: [checklist].

Templates make task creation fast and consistent. They also make it easy to onboard new team members (human or agent) who need to create tasks — they do not need to reinvent the format every time.

The Compounding Effect

Good task descriptions produce good output, which builds agent confidence and memory. The agent learns what "good" looks like for your specific context. Its future work improves even on tasks with slightly less detailed descriptions, because it has accumulated enough context to fill gaps intelligently.

Bad task descriptions produce bad output, which leads to rejections, which burn cycles without building useful memory. The agent learns nothing from a rejected task with vague feedback except that something was wrong — it does not know what to change.

Investing in task description quality is not extra work. It is the highest-leverage activity in agent team management. Fifteen minutes writing a thorough task description saves hours of review, rework, and frustration.

Your agents are only as good as the instructions you give them. Make those instructions count.
