You assigned a task to your AI agent. It came back with something that technically matches what you asked for but misses the point entirely. The tone is wrong. The format is off. Key requirements are absent. You reject it, rewrite the description, and try again.
This is the most common friction point in working with AI agents — and it is almost always a task description problem, not a model limitation.
Agents are remarkably capable when given clear instructions. They are remarkably bad at reading your mind. The gap between what you meant and what you wrote is where quality dies.
Here is how to close that gap.
Why Task Descriptions Matter More Than You Think
When a human colleague gets a vague brief, they compensate with institutional knowledge. They remember the last three meetings. They know your preferences. They understand the project's unwritten goals.
AI agents have none of that. Each session starts fresh. The task description — along with project context docs — is the entire universe of information your agent has to work with. Everything you leave out is a decision you are letting the agent make on its own.
That is not always bad. Agents can make reasonable decisions. But if you have a specific expectation, it needs to be in writing.
The Anatomy of a Great Task Description
Every effective task description has three components. Miss any one of them and you are gambling on the output quality.
1. Context — The "Why"
Context tells the agent what this task is part of, who it is for, and what happened before it. Without context, agents produce generic output. With it, they produce work that fits.
Bad: "Write a blog post about AI agents."
Good: "Write a blog post for our company blog (jagodana.com). Our audience is technical founders and engineering managers who are evaluating AI agent tools for their teams. This is the third post in a series about getting started with AgentCenter — the previous two covered setup and creating your first agent."
Context does not need to be long. Two to three sentences that answer "why does this task exist?" and "who will read/use the output?" are enough.
2. Specification — The "What"
Specification is the precise description of what the agent needs to produce. This is where most task descriptions fail — they describe the topic but not the artifact.
Good specification includes:
- Format and structure — Is this a markdown doc? A JSON file? A code component? How many sections?
- Length — Word count or approximate size. "A 700-word blog post" is clear. "A blog post" is not.
- Tone and style — Professional? Casual? Technical? Match it to your brand.
- Constraints — What to avoid. No jargon. No first-person. No placeholder content.
- Specific inclusions — Keywords to target, links to include, data points to reference.
Example specification:
Write a 700-word SEO blog post targeting the keyword "AI agents for startups." Use three H2 sections. Include at least one real-world example (not hypothetical). End with a CTA linking to agentcenter.cloud. Professional but accessible tone — no jargon, no buzzword salad.
3. Acceptance Criteria — The "Done" Checklist
Acceptance criteria are the conditions that must be true for the task to be considered complete. They serve two purposes: they tell the agent exactly what to verify before submitting, and they give the reviewer a clear rubric for approval or rejection.
Write them as a checkbox list:
- [ ] Post is 650–800 words
- [ ] Contains exactly three H2 sections
- [ ] Targets "AI agents for startups" as primary keyword (appears in title, first paragraph, and at least one H2)
- [ ] Includes one concrete example with specific details
- [ ] Ends with CTA linking to agentcenter.cloud
- [ ] No placeholder text, no lorem ipsum, no "[insert X here]"
- [ ] Proofread — no typos, no broken markdown
Agents that receive acceptance criteria consistently produce higher-quality first drafts because they self-review against the list before submitting.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
Mistake 1: Context Starvation
Leaving out the "why" and expecting the agent to infer it. Fix: always include at least one sentence of context — the project, the audience, and what came before.
Mistake 2: Ambiguous Scope
"Improve the landing page copy" — which parts? The hero section? All of it? What is wrong with the current copy? Fix: be specific about what to change and what to keep.
Mistake 3: No Success Definition
Without acceptance criteria, "done" is subjective. The agent thinks it is done. You disagree. Neither is wrong — you just never defined done. Fix: always include a checklist.
Mistake 4: Overloading a Single Task
Cramming five different deliverables into one task. "Write the blog post, create the social media copy for three platforms, design an OG image, and submit all of them." Fix: one task per deliverable. If they are related, use a parent task with subtasks.
Mistake 5: Missing Reference Material
"Write copy that matches our brand voice" without linking to a brand guide or example. Fix: attach or link reference docs. Use project context docs in AgentCenter to store brand guidelines, style guides, and examples that agents can access on every task.
A Template You Can Steal
Here is the structure we use internally:
**Goal:** [One sentence — what is the end result?]
**Context:** [2-3 sentences — why does this matter, who is it for, what came before?]

- Tone: [professional / casual / technical]

Copy it. Adapt it. Use it on every task.
The Feedback Loop
Even with perfect task descriptions, agents sometimes miss the mark. That is normal. What matters is the feedback loop:
- Review the deliverable against the acceptance criteria.
- If rejecting, explain specifically what is wrong — not "this isn't what I wanted" but "the tone is too formal, sections 2 and 3 overlap, and the CTA is missing."
- Update the task description with the clarification so the agent has it on the next attempt.
- Update your project context docs if the issue reflects a recurring gap (like brand voice or formatting preferences).
Over time, your context docs accumulate the knowledge that makes every future task description shorter and every deliverable better.
